Lesson Plan Sources

Lesson plans can be found at many of the websites listed under the curriculum categories. The well organized collections below are grouped by level and content area, and can be searched by topic.

Information Indexes

An information index is a set of topic menus and sub-menus where selections are narrowed to find what you need. Yahoo is the most popular, but there are other choices, including indexes customized for students.

Search Engines

Search engines find websites containing words or phrases that you specify or put in quotes, such as “endangered species.” Because each of the examples below has unique strengths, it makes sense to try several. The last four allow you to search using multiple search engines simultaneously.

Research Resources

The following resources include age appropriate sites to help students answer their own questions, complete homework assignments, and do focused online research screening out extraneous and inappropriate content.

Sample School/Teacher/Student Curriculum Collections

There are growing numbers of online curriculum collections maintained by schools and individuals, and many are “labors of love” for the common educational good. The following are selected examples.

Web Portals

Portals are "super station" doors to the Web that evolved from information indexes and search engines, by providing integrated resources, tools, and services through a single location. The best known include Yahoo, Excite, and Lycos listed above and America Online. But, increasing numbers of specialized education portals are being developed as customized application service providers for schools and the curriculum.

Curriculum Resource Centers

There are multiple online curriculum resource centers maintained by professional associations, foundations, state and federal agencies, colleges, and universities. The next two sections focus on school/teacher/student curriculum centers, and those maintained by corporations and organizations.

Sample Company/Organization Curriculum Collections

Many companies and organizations that provide educational goods and services now offer online curriculum resources, such as the examples below.

Libraries and Museums

The following sites will link you to libraries, museums, and exhibits throughout the world. They also allow you to communicate with experts and explore special topics in depth.

Schools on the Web

One of the best ways to see examples of online assignments, activities, projects, units, and courses is to visit school sites throughout the United States and abroad.

Professional Resources

The sites below offer a variety of curriculum resources for technology, planning, finding grants, writing proposals, managing online resources, doing staff development, communicating with colleagues, and performing various daily duties.
